Michael Anthony Malczewski, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash reported at 6:52 a.m. A highway patrol statement said Mr. Malczewski approached the Holloway Road crossing southbound in a 2017 Honda Civic with warning gates lowered and a freight train stopped nearby one of the two tracks. He entered the crossing and was struck by the Amtrak train approaching on the parallel track. Sgt. Shawn Fosgate, assistant commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Bowling Green post, said at the scene that no one else was in the car, which was pushed about half a mile west along the tracks before the train stopped near the Wentworth Avenue dead end in Springfield Township. <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> Sergeant Fosgate said the Amtrak train’s speed was reported as 77 mph. Several of its 163 passengers suffered minor injuries after the train’s emergency brakes applied, and the train was delayed at the scene for about 3½ hours for the investigation and then for a replacement engineer to get there. None of the crew were injured. The Lake Shore Limited train from New York to Chicago had left the Toledo station at 6:40 a.m. Video footage from a forward-facing camera in its locomotive was to be reviewed as part of the investigation, Sergeant Fosgate said. The crossing where the collision occurred is near Front Street and its intersection with Railroad Street, and well north of Airport Highway. It is set up with extra barriers designed to prevent vehicles from crossing the tracks when warning lights and gates are activated and is designated as a “quiet zone” where train crews are not supposed to blow the engine horn unless there is an emergency. <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> The Holloway crossing also is about a mile west of the former McCord Road crossing where, on Dec. 16, 2009, two Springfield High School students were struck by Amtrak’s westbound Capitol Limited. A male freshman student was killed while a sophomore girl walking with him suffered serious injuries that included the loss of a leg. Authorities said the students in that accident were walking to school when they saw the train coming and unsuccessfully tried to get across the tracks ahead of it.
