Virginia Zoo Closed After Police Discover 28 Dead Animals and Rescue 90 in Poor Condition

    2023-12-13
    • Nearly 100 animals were seized from the Natural Bridge Zoo in Virginia following an animal cruelty investigation.
    • The seizure included 89 living animals and 28 deceased ones, with the animals suffering from health issues and neglect.
    • The investigation involved search warrants related to alleged animal care negligence and cruelty.

In a significant development at the Natural Bridge Zoo in Rockbridge County, Virginia, authorities have seized nearly 100 animals as part of an animal cruelty investigation.

The operation resulted in 89 living animals being taken into custody, along with the discovery of 28 deceased animals. This action was prompted by search warrants issued in connection with allegations of negligence and cruelty in animal care. Many of the animals were found in poor health, living in unsanitary conditions, and not receiving adequate care or nutrition.

The situation at the zoo was brought to light following observations and investigations that indicated a direct and immediate threat to the animals' health and safety. Among the animals seized were lemurs, macaws, pythons, llamas, and a 12-year-old Siberian white tiger named Zeus, who had to be euthanized. The investigation also uncovered disturbing practices such as the alleged use of a bullhook on elephants to instill fear and gain respect. The zoo, previously cited by the USDA for various violations, is now at the center of this ongoing criminal investigation. The owner's daughter, Gretchen Mogensen, expressed shock and distress over the allegations, while the zoo's attorney questioned the validity of the charges. A hearing is scheduled for December 20 to determine the fate of the animals, including four giraffes, and to address allegations of cruel treatment and neglect.
