Massive 30-Foot Waves Threaten California Coast Amid Storm

    2023-12-28
    • The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for dangerously high surf and life-threatening currents in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting tonight.
    • Waves up to 30 feet are forecasted to hit the coast, particularly on northwest and west-facing beaches, with expectations of becoming deadly on Thursday.
    • The NWS also forecasts another round of heavy downpours in the area from early Friday morning until Saturday midday.

In a significant weather alert, the National Weather Service has issued warnings for the California coast, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area, as the region braces for an onslaught of dangerous weather conditions.

Forecasts predict waves reaching up to 30 feet, accompanied by strong winds and multiple rounds of rain throughout the week.

The imminent threat posed by these weather conditions has led to a high surf warning, emphasizing the life-threatening nature of the currents that are expected to start impacting the area tonight. The most severe dangers are anticipated on Thursday, with breaking waves as high as 30 feet possible, particularly on northwest and west-facing beaches.

Officials are urging the public, especially beachgoers, to exercise extreme caution. People are advised to stay out of the water, keep a safe distance from rocks and jetties, and remain vigilant, especially when it comes to children and pets. The government agency has stressed the hazardous nature of the high wave heights, warning that they can easily sweep individuals into the sea.

This warning is particularly significant considering the surf forecasting service Surfline's prediction that San Francisco's Ocean Beach might experience waves as large as 35 feet.

Accompanying these surf warnings, the NWS also cautions about another round of downpours expected in the area from early Friday morning till Saturday midday. These weather patterns are projected to persist until early January, indicating a prolonged period of hazardous conditions along the California coast.

These warnings come in the wake of blizzard conditions affecting other parts of the United States, including Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The NWS has reported significant winter storms with heavy snow and blizzard conditions, affecting travel and road safety across these regions. The intense weather conditions across the country underscore the need for heightened awareness and preparedness during this volatile winter season.
