The Three Florida Counties Where People Live the Longest Have Been Revealed

    2023-12-28

Life expectancy is a critical measure that tells us a lot about the health and well-being of a population. In the United States, we've seen a steady increase in life expectancy over the years. From 1960 to 2019, Americans' life expectancy jumped by about ten years, reaching an average age of 79.

This improvement is largely thanks to better healthcare, including advancements in medical technology and diagnostics, as well as healthier lifestyle choices.

In Florida, a study by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute provides some fascinating insights. The 2022 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps project looked at counties nationwide to see where people have the longest life expectancy. This average measure estimates how long a person can expect to live from birth. It's calculated by looking at the number of deaths over a certain period and the average number of people at risk of dying during that time.

Counties with unreliable or not enough data were not included in this analysis, and the mortality data was sourced from the National Vital Statistics System.

Let's take a closer look at the top three counties in Florida with the longest life expectancy:

    1. Collier County

    • Average Life Expectancy: 86.1 years, 6.4 years more than the statewide average.
    • Statewide Health Outcomes Rank: #2
      • Length of Life Rank: #3
      • Quality of Life Rank: #4

Collier County stands out with a significantly higher life expectancy than the state average. The county's high ranking in both length and quality of life indicates a strong overall health profile.

    2. Glades County

    • Average Life Expectancy: 84.1 years, 4.4 years more than the statewide average.
    • Statewide Health Outcomes Rank: #52
      • Length of Life Rank: #49
      • Quality of Life Rank: #54

Despite a lower overall health outcomes rank, Glades County still boasts a life expectancy well above the state average.

    3. Lee County

    • Average Life Expectancy: 82.4 years, 2.7 years more than the statewide average.
    • Statewide Health Outcomes Rank: #16
      • Length of Life Rank: #15
      • Quality of Life Rank: #14

Lee County also shows a higher-than-average life expectancy. Its balanced ranking in both length and quality of life reflects a healthy environment for its residents.
