Arizona Military Museum Shuts Down Following Founder's Offensive Remarks

    2023-12-30
    • Joe Abodeely, 80, a Vietnam War veteran, was ousted from the Arizona Military Museum after making offensive remarks.
    • The Arizona Military Museum was closed and lost state support following Abodeely's comments.
    • The Arizona National Guard expressed concerns about Abodeely's conduct and the future management of the museum.

The Arizona Military Museum, curated by 80-year-old Vietnam War veteran Joe Abodeely for over four decades, has closed its doors following controversial statements made by Abodeely.

During a tour, he claimed that he would be replaced by "some gay, black, woman, woke Jew," stirring significant backlash. This incident led to the state withdrawing support from the nonprofit organization overseeing the museum.

Brigadier General John Conley of the Arizona National Guard sent a letter to Abodeely expressing concern over his remarks. Despite Abodeely completing a diversity and inclusion course, his conduct continued to be problematic. He was alleged to have disparaged Americans and claimed a mannequin with its hand on its hip represented gay soldiers. The 86-year-old museum, formerly run by the Arizona National Guard Historical Society, now faces an uncertain future.

Abodeely's behavior was inconsistent with his previous public statements condemning racism and division. His refusal to step down from his role, despite the turmoil and a request to do so, resulted in the state seeking a new group to manage the museum. The incident reflects tension between preserving the legacy of a long-standing institution and ensuring respectful, inclusive conduct by those in charge.
