Young Woman's Shocking Stage-Four Cancer Diagnosis After Routine Blood Test

    2023-12-30
    • Samantha Bulloch, aged 28, was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer after a routine blood test.
    • The cancer has spread to her colon, liver, and right lung, significantly impacting her health.
    • Despite leading a healthy lifestyle with no family history of cancer, Samantha faces a grim prognosis but remains hopeful after starting treatment.

Samantha Bulloch, a 28-year-old library assistant from Sydney, had her life dramatically altered when she was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer.

The diagnosis came unexpectedly after a routine blood test to check her iron levels revealed tumours in her body. Despite not having any lifestyle risk factors traditionally associated with cancer—such as smoking, drinking, or eating processed meat—and having no family history of bowel cancer, Samantha found herself facing a serious health challenge.

Her symptoms, initially dismissed as stress-related, included fatigue, bloating, and occasional blood spotting. However, a severe pain in her shoulder, later linked to tumours in her liver, led to further medical investigation. The diagnosis was confirmed through a blood test and CT scan, which showed a 6cm tumour in her colon and multiple tumours in her liver and right lung.

Samantha began chemotherapy treatment in March, and by October, the tumours had significantly reduced in size. Despite this positive response, her treatment will be ongoing, and her prognosis remains uncertain. She was initially given a life expectancy of two to three years, but this can be reassessed with each new scan.

Throughout her journey, Samantha has been surprised by her own resilience and urges others to be proactive about their health. She emphasizes the importance of being attuned to one's body and seeking medical advice when something feels off. Her experience highlights the unpredictability of cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment.
