As we step into the New Year, Mississippi maintains its position with the nation's most pocket-friendly gas prices, keeping wallets at ease for motorists across the state.

According to the Auto Club of America, the average gas price in the Magnolia State hovers around $2.68 per gallon, a slight incremental increase from last week's $2.68, yet notably down by 10 cents compared to the prices a year ago.

In contrast, the national average stands at $3.12 per gallon, exhibiting a slight decrease of a cent from the preceding week and a noteworthy dip of 12 cents from the previous month. Energy analyst Patrick DeHaan from Gasbuddy foresees a potential further decrease in gas prices over the coming months, offering a glimmer of relief for consumers.

Zooming into Mississippi's localities, Claiborne County in southwest Mississippi grapples with the highest gas prices at $3.11 per gallon. Conversely, the more economical pump rates prevail in Simpson County, situated in the south-central region, boasting the lowest prices at $2.58 per gallon. Metropolis-wise, the Mississippi Gulf Coast region claims the lowest prices among metros at $2.62 per gallon, closely followed by Hattiesburg ($2.66), the Jackson metro ($2.66), and Olive Branch-Southaven ($2.70).

Mississippi boasts the second-lowest state taxes and fees on gasoline, totaling 18.79 cents per gallon, trailing only behind Alaska, which levies 15.13 cents per gallon, as per the American Petroleum Institute's data.

Comparatively, Hawaii tops the charts with the highest gas prices at a staggering $4.68 per gallon, trailed closely by California ($4.67), Washington ($4.14), Nevada ($3.93), and Oregon ($3.80). States neighbouring Mississippi also showcase relatively affordable gas prices, with Texas and Arkansas sharing the same price tag at $2.68 per gallon, while Missouri and Oklahoma stand at $2.70 per gallon.

Turning attention to Mississippi's bordering states, Louisiana records gas prices at $2.75 per gallon, followed by Tennessee ($2.78) and Alabama ($2.82), demonstrating a slightly higher pricing trend compared to the Magnolia State.

As Mississippians kickstart the New Year, the steady and relatively lower gas prices continue to serve as a welcome respite, contributing to a more affordable driving experience compared to several states across the nation, affirming the state's position as a budget-friendly hub for motorists.
