Many workers in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs commute downtown; some drive or take Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) buses and trains. Yet an even bigger chunk of residents rely on Metra services to get them to work, school, and back home.

Metra is an inexpensive transportation option, but many changes are coming, including a one-way fare ticket increase, changes to monthly passes, and the closing of ticket windows.

    • One-way tickets are increasing to $3.75 from Zone 1 to Zone 2. Tickets purchased before or on January 31 will remain valid for 14 days after purchase.
    • The 10-ride ticket won't be available after January 31; it's being replaced with a Day Pass 5-Pack, which can be used on any five days within 90 days of purchase.
    • Super Save Monthly Passes are going away, and prices will be based on distance travel.
    • Remaining ticket windows, including at downtown stations, will be closed on February 1.

Metra aims to repurpose some agents as customer service representatives. Riders needing tickets must purchase them through the Ventra app, ticket vending machines, or train conductors.

The Fair Transit South Cook pilot on Metra Electric and Rock Island lines will end on January 31 as well; however, it will be replaced with a reduced fare program on all lines for low-income riders.

Metra's website gives more information about changes going into effect in February.
