Illinois Village Mayor Faces Backlash Over $300K Salary and Royal Lifestyle

    2024-01-07
    • Tiffany Henyard, first female mayor of Dolton, Illinois, faces criticism for her $300,000 salary and lavish lifestyle funded by taxpayers.
    • She has proposed a controversial bill to reduce the next mayor's salary to $25,000, which is seen as a deterrent for potential competitors in future elections.
    • Henyard's tenure is marred by scandal, including hiring a convicted child sex offender as a code enforcement officer and extravagant security and travel expenses.

Tiffany Henyard, the first female mayor of Dolton, a small village in Illinois, has been embroiled in controversy since her election in 2021.

She has drawn significant criticism for her opulent lifestyle and high salary, reportedly $300,000 per year, which is seen as excessive for the leader of a village of 20,000 residents. Henyard's use of taxpayer funds extends to professional stylists, hair and makeup teams for public appearances, and lavish photo shoots for the county's billboards, often featuring herself.

In a move that has incited further controversy, Henyard proposed a law to cap her successor's salary at $25,000, unless she remains in the role. This proposal, deemed by some as illegal, is widely regarded as an attempt to dissuade competition in the next mayoral election. Henyard's governance has been further tainted by her decision to hire a convicted child gang rapist, Lavelle Redmond, as the town's code enforcement officer. She defended this decision, citing the importance of giving convicts a second chance.

Henyard's spending on security and travel, including a trip to Las Vegas with a $3,000 airfare purportedly for a conference, has raised questions. She has been evasive about the funding sources for her lifestyle and has responded to criticism by dismissing township trustees as 'haters' on TikTok. Dolton trustees have filed a lawsuit against her, alleging forgery and accusing her of withholding financial records. Despite a failed recall bid against her, Henyard continues to assert her role as 'Dolton's mayor' on social media, often showcasing her involvement in various town events.
