    Patio Heaters: Propane vs Electric

    2024-01-09

Many homeowners in northeastern North Carolina take advantage of our mild-ish winters by investing in patio heaters. These units help extend the use of outdoor spaces into the cooler months during breaks from the bitterest cold. You'll find residential models in either propane or electric. They are hands-down the best tool for the job when you want to enjoy your patio all year long.

But you should consider some distinct pros and cons before investing in one. Your primary considerations are heater efficiency and purchasing cost.

Let's look at the pros and cons of each type:

Propane Patio Heaters | Pros and Cons

    Pros:

    • Higher Heat Output: Propane heaters usually have more BTUs (British Thermal Units), thus throwing off more warmth.
    • Portability: Since they don't require an electrical outlet, you can install a propane heater in almost any covered outdoor space.
    • Quick Heating: These heaters typically warm up remarkably fast for almost immediate coziness.

    Cons:

    • Fuel Costs and Availability: Propane requires periodic refilling. The costs are unpredictable. They could even create a slight inconvenience if you don't plan fuel replenishment in advance.
    • Safety Considerations: Propane heaters are a fire risk if the propane tank leaks or somehow (stranger things have happened!) gets tipped over.
    • Environmental Impact: Propane burning means carbon dioxide. That's a concern for those interested in environmental issues.

Electric Patio Heaters | Pros and Cons

    Pros:

    • Convenience: Electric heaters are easy to set up for use. Just plug your unit into a standard electrical outlet.
    • Lower Operating Costs: They might be cheaper to operate than propane heaters. That factor depends on your electricity rates - a calculation you'll need to make.
    • Eco-Friendly: Electric heaters produce no direct emissions. Those who prefer an environmentally friendly option find them more aligned with their needs.

    Cons:

    • Limited Placement: You must install an electric heater near a power outlet, thus limiting where and how you might enjoy it.
    • Less Heat Output: Electric models produce less heat than propane heaters. They're somewhat less effective in very cold conditions.
    • Warm-Up Time: Some electric heaters take a good bit longer to give off the warmth you desire.

    Considerations for Both Types

    • Space Size: The size of the area you need to warm may dictate the most suitable model to meet your expectations.
    • Climate: The higher heat output of propane heaters may be more beneficial. It's the go-to for the coldest conditions.
    • Cost: Consider both the initial purchase cost and the ongoing operating costs.
    • Safety Features: Be sure to buy a unit with automatic shut-off, tip-over protection, and heat guards. These features will help you enjoy the safest operation.

Both propane and electric patio heaters have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Choosing between them means thinking about your specific needs. Either one will add comfort and allow you to use your patio during cool spring and fall evenings and on the mildest winter days. It's your call - and you luckily have plenty of pickings available.

The author conveniently side- stepped the cost issue. Outdoor electric heat would be costly
