Whalen Optical Laboratories to close after 35 years in Rockford

    2024-01-09

After 35 successful years, the owners of a well-established optical center in Rockford have made the decision to retire. Whalen Optical Laboratories, founded in 1989 by Cathy Whalen, a third-generation optical professional from Europe, and her husband Mark, who is from the Chicago area, has operated on East State Street with a unique approach. Unlike other optical centers, they have never had an on-site doctor. Instead, they have built strong relationships with trusted ophthalmologists, retina specialists, and optometrists, who refer their patients to Whalen Optical Laboratories for their eyewear needs. As they prepare to retire, Cathy and Mark reflect on the fruitful journey they have had, serving their community and collaborating extensively with other eye care professionals.

"Our business has thrived on the recommendations and connections established through our partnerships with various medical professionals in town," Whalen explained. "When individuals have complex prescriptions, they are often referred to us. Additionally, because we have both a laboratory and a retail space, we have been able to provide exceptionally competitive pricing for stylish eyewear and lenses."

Nevertheless, the industry is undergoing significant transformations. While technological advancements have undoubtedly eased certain aspects of the business, the cost of equipment continues to climb, and the prevalence of small optical centers is gradually diminishing. Whalen further revealed that the optical field is now primarily driven by insurance considerations—a shift that has had a profound impact.

"Large corporations have begun asserting their dominance, encroaching on our industry," she lamented.

The closure of their business is scheduled for May 31, marking the end of a chapter in Rockford's optical landscape.
