    The Transit Construction Mitigation Fund

    2024-01-09

The Honolulu Rail Transit, Skyline, is like a wrecking ball for businesses on Dillingham Blvd. The last time I was there, Waikamilo Shopping Center was still accessible. Seven months ago, during the summer of 2023, I ate at Waiakamilo Drive-In. I just searched Waikamilo Drive-In and noticed they are permanently closed.

Other businesses along Dillingham Blvd, like Subway, felt the wrath of the Rail Transit. Even though I live on a neighboring island, I still have property on Oahu, so I visit often. I can’t help but think that all the eateries will be gone when they finally complete the rail through Dillingham.

Several Honolulu Council members have introduced the “Transit Construction Mitigation Fund.” What is the Transit Construction Mitigation Fund? If I had to guess, it sounds like a low-interest loan.

It’s good to know that Bob’s Bar-B-Que restaurant will move to a new location and survive the rail transit disruption.

    Final Thoughts

With the rail transit construction on Dillingham Blvd years from completion, how many more businesses will be impacted by the disruptions? It appears more small businesses and restaurants will close before the Rail Transit on Dillingham Blvd phase is complete.
