Dave Williams, the current chair of the Colorado Republican Party and a former state representative, has entered the race to represent the 5th Congressional District following the announcement of U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn's decision not to seek reelection.

Williams made his candidacy official through an email from the state party's account, affirming that he would maintain his position as party chairman throughout the primary election phase. In his statement, he highlighted the party's ongoing efforts, focusing on rebuilding infrastructure, preparing for upcoming caucuses and assemblies, pursuing legal battles concerning President Trump's ballot inclusion, and spotlighting perceived flaws within the Democratic Party.

Having previously contested the Republican primary for the district in 2022, Williams lost to Lamborn, who later declared his retirement at the year's end.

During Williams' tenure as party chairman, the Colorado GOP appealed a state Supreme Court ruling that restricted former President Donald Trump from appearing on the primary election ballot, escalating the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Notably, Colorado is witnessing open races in both the 3rd Congressional District and the 4th Congressional District. Rep. Ken Buck announced his retirement from the 4th District, while Rep. Lauren Boebert revealed her intention to shift from the 3rd District to pursue Buck's seat.

The 5th District encompasses Colorado Springs and El Paso County, comprising a substantial population of U.S. military personnel and defence industry contractors. This district is pivotal given its unique demographic and strategic presence within the state.
