New home sales down while housing demand strong

REGIONAL -- With several homes in Grandview, Kennewick and in Idaho, the non-profit is bringing its first home to Benton City.

The non-profit First Story, with Hayden Homes, gives homes to families in need for zero-down and zero-interest for 30 years.

Housing affordability is still slipping out of reach for many Americans as interest rates continue to rise.

Mid-Columbia families are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to receive this home. It's going to be a newly-built three bedroom, two bathroom home in the Hayden Homes community in Benton City.

The home will follow the Alderwood design and floorplan and will be fully equipped with move-in ready appliances, washer and dryer, full fencing and landscaping.

First Story's Executive Director Claire Duncan said, "We have a lot of families that are working hard in our community and have the ability to make a monthly payment. But for whatever reason, saving 20-percent and then with interest rates being now over 6-percent, that's just putting the opportunity out of reach for so many families."

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet these requirements:

    • No negative credit accounts or items in collections
    • Live or work in the greater Tri-Cities area
    • U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien status
    • First time home-buyer
    • A gross household income between $59,000 and $79,000

The home will be available in the fall and the selected family will be invited to participate in a summer time.

    Applications are currently open.

Zero-down and zero-interest for 30 years sounds like a dream come true. I hope the recipients also believe in growing their own veggies in those new backyards!
