Transgender Muslim Woman Sues New York City for $22 Million Over Detention Center Placement

    2024-01-13
    • Ali Miles, a transgender Muslim woman, is suing New York City for $22 million for being placed in a men's detention center.
    • Miles faced harassment and assault in the male facility despite having a court order for placement in a female unit.
    • Miles has a history of filing lawsuits against various entities for alleged gender identity-based discrimination.

Ali Miles, a transgender woman who identifies as Muslim, has filed a lawsuit against New York City, demanding over $22 million in damages.

The lawsuit stems from her placement in a men's detention center on Rikers Island, where she claims to have faced discrimination, harassment, and assault due to her gender identity. Despite expressing her female identity and reportedly having a court order for placement in a female unit, Miles was housed in a male facility.

Miles, who was awaiting transfer to Arizona for domestic violence charges, was eventually convicted of several offenses, including aggravated harassment and disorderly conduct. She was sentenced to 312 days in jail and three years of supervised probation.

The lawsuit details the distress and humiliation Miles experienced during her detention, including being strip-searched by male guards and subjected to derogatory comments. Miles alleges that she suffered significant shock and distress upon realizing she was placed in a male jail.

Miles has a notable history of litigation, having previously sued businesses like a yoga studio, a tourism company, and fitness centers, claiming gender identity-based discrimination. These cases, however, were dismissed. The current lawsuit against New York City is progressing, and Miles is now represented by legal counsel.

The situation highlights broader issues surrounding the treatment of transgender individuals in detention facilities and public accommodations. New York City businesses have been adapting to avoid similar disputes by making bathrooms neutral or providing single-occupancy options. The case raises important questions about gender identity rights and the challenges faced by transgender individuals in various societal contexts.
