Pennsylvania faces ongoing power outages after a windy, cold weekend

Central Pennsylvania continues to reel under severe power outages following a weekend battered by harsh winds and frigid temperatures. The aftermath of the stormy weekend is starkly evident across the region, where the brute force of nature left its mark. In a striking incident, a building near the Penbrook Fire Co. on South 28th Street lost its roof to the violent winds on Sunday.

Widespread Impact

Thousands of residents woke up to a powerless Monday morning as the strong winds from Sunday wreaked havoc, felling trees and severing power lines. The situation was particularly grim in Dauphin County, where the winds were strong enough to strip the roof off a building. This storm system swept across Pennsylvania, blanketing northern areas with snow squalls and battering the southcentral region with powerful gusts.

Ongoing Power Restoration Efforts

The power outage statistics are daunting. PPL has reported over 6,000 outages statewide, with approximately 1,000 customers in the dark in regions encompassing Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. A similar plight is faced by residents in Northumberland and Lehigh counties, with over a thousand more grappling with the blackout. Weather-related issues are the primary culprits, and for some, power is not expected to return until Tuesday night. First Energy's numbers add to the grim tally, with around 300 customers in Dauphin County, over 500 in Lebanon County, and more than 1,000 in Berks County still awaiting power restoration.

Chilly Forecast Ahead

As if to add to the woes, the weather forecast for Monday evening predicts a fresh round of challenges. The Harrisburg area is bracing for two to three inches of snow through Tuesday morning. The week ahead doesn’t promise much respite, with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, intensifying the hardship for those without power.
