High Schooler's Guinea Pig Lofts Turn $2,000 into $410,000

    2024-01-17
    • 17-year-old Bella Lin earns $410,000 a year from her luxury guinea pig loft business, GuineaLoft.
    • Bella started the business using $2,000 of her savings, selling nearly 11,000 cages in 2022.
    • Her unique design features an open-floor, two-tiered enclosure, offering better visibility and mobility for guinea pigs.

Bella Lin, a 17-year-old from California, created a successful business by manufacturing luxury 'lofts' for guinea pigs.

Her venture, GuineaLoft, stemmed from a personal experience where one of her guinea pigs was snatched by an eagle. To protect her pets, she sought to design better enclosures, moving away from traditional cages. Her innovative design includes an open-floor concept with a two-tiered bottom, enhancing visibility and mobility for the pets.

Bella invested $2,000 of her savings into the idea and worked on several prototypes before finalizing her design. The bottom of the cage is made from biodegradable, wax-coated paper, similar to airplane barf bags, which are easy to dispose of and require customers to return to her Amazon store for replacements. In 2022, she sold just under 11,000 cages, earning around $410,000, or roughly $34,000 per month.

She manages the business while attending Khan Lab School and works 20 hours per week on GuineaLoft. Her team in China takes care of manufacturing, packaging, and photographing the products, while Bella handles design, pricing, marketing, and overall business strategy. Initially, Bella pursued another venture, TLeggings, an athleisure brand for girls, which brought in $300,000 in retail in 2020. However, realizing the lack of innovation and a saturated market, she closed TLeggings to focus on GuineaLoft.

Bella's success with GuineaLoft has not only been financially rewarding but also personally empowering, boosting her confidence and redefining her approach to life and business beyond high school.
