    Filson Finally Announces Women’s Apparel … Coming Soon

    Today, 127-year-old American brand Filson, known for its popular fashion-meets-traditional outdoor clothing, drops its first women’s apparel. Ever.

    Which is wild, considering that “women have been wearing Filson since its inception,” the brand admitted. Until now, the brand has never been able “to fully tap into this audience.” But come on, I love a durable double-breasted canvas jacket as much as the next person.

    Bold plaid wool jackets. A heavy-duty denim you’d pair with leather gloves. Waxed-cotton anything. And dozens of flannels. There’s also leather, knit, a knee-length overcoat, embroidery detailing, vests, bags, and just a touch of elevated style. And, in specific women’s sizes. Everything you know and love about Filson has finally been brought to life for the brand’s female fans.

    Now, the rest of us can get in on the fun, and don’t need to shop men’s sizes anymore! The women’s collection isn’t just a women’s shirt here or there, either. (Peep a handbag version of one of its classic duffels.) It consists of outerwear, shirts, overshirts, and accessories; a whopping 32 styles and 60 SKUs in an XS-2XL size range. And, prices start at just $98.

    There’s an impressive variety in the catalog, especially in the outerwear category. Though, touches like the various styles of parka, shirt pocket and button detailing, and embroidery details on the denim shirt — as well as the vast number of choices for insulated and down jackets — are awesome to see as well.

    In its first run for fall/winter 2024, Filson has covered just about all the layers female shoppers could want.

    What’s missing off the bat? Well, a few options for women’s bottoms would be nice, as well as anything women’s-specific in the Sportsman and hunting-specific categories. Also, more technical baselayers like crews and Filson’s more traditional sweaters would be cool to see, down the line.

    That’s about to change with the help of Cristina Calori, co-founder and president of an Italy-based distributor and licensor that took a minority stake in Filson in 2020. Inspired by “pioneering women in history,” Cristina worked closely with Filson’s CCO to create a womenswear collection. The team went through the Filson archives to try and blend farm-to-town utility, outdoor style, and Filson’s more modern inspirations into one line.

    This first collection is inspired by the 1970s and ’80s “Western Resort Town Americana.” (Picture high-end ranch living outside Aspen, garb out of a John Wayne cowboy western, or the flannels you’d see skijoring past you down Main Avenue, Silverton.) You get the idea.

    Filson’s hallmark tin cloth and Mackinaw Wool fabrics are just as rampant in the women’s fits as they were in some of the earliest jackets Filson made. Minus the first-ever 1912 waxed cotton jacket, which for those after women’s sizes, we will still have to wait for.

    And while it’s nice to know it finally exists, the women’s collection won’t be available for purchase until August 2024.

    Filson plans to carry it online as well as in its retail stores, and several select retailers in the U.S. and Europe. Note: Eight of the 60 women’s SKUs will be available exclusively in Europe; the remaining are available worldwide …

    … assuming there will be enough to go around.
