Florida Sends National Guard To Texas Assisting In Placing Wire Along Border
2024-02-01
Governor Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday, January 30, 2024, that he is sending the Florida National Guard along with State Guard members to Texas. Although the Supreme Court ruled last week that the Federal Government had the power to remove razor wire and other barriers erected at the border, the Texas National Guard continued placing the wire. Now, Florida is assisting with the placement of the razor wire and any other barriers needed.
According to the report by USA Today, Gov. DeSantis is sending at least 1,000 National Guard members and State Guard volunteers “relatively shortly” which we can surmise Texas welcomes the assistance.
DeSantis expressed “The goal is to help Texas fortify this border, help them strengthen the barricades, help them add barriers, help them add the wire that they need to so that we can stop this invasion once and for all.” DeSantis encouraged all states to band together in this process.
Repeating the stand, many Republicans hold, DeSantis agreed those seeking asylum typically turn themselves into Border Patrol Agents at ports of entry. While migrants, including from Mexico, try to sneak in and evade Agents.
Although the razor wire is meant to discourage migrants, many including children risk serious injury as they cross through the deterrent.
According to Politico, other states have also loaned their National Guard Troops to Texas, which include Arizona, South Dakota, Iowa, and Arkansas. And although two of these states, Iowa and Arkansas are affected minimally by unauthorized immigration, former Governor of Arkansas, Asa Huthinson said he hoped the move would help “reduce the adverse impact of illegal immigration on Arkansas.”
In the past, the federal government has commanded National Guard troops to the border – and not just under Donald Trump. But Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and even Joe Biden have had their reasons for the command. What is different now is that state governors send their assigned National Guard to the border without command from the present presidential administration.
According to a press release posted on the Texas Governor, Greg Abbott’s site on January 26, 2024, data was presented regarding criminal activity since the beginning of “Operation Lone Star.” Operation Lone Star is a border security initiative launched by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in response to rising border crossings.
· Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 496,700 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 38,700 criminal arrests, with more than 35,100 felony charges. In the fight against the fentanyl crisis, Texas law enforcement has seized over 454 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.
In addition, the site states:
“Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.”
In an interview with America’s Newsroom, Governor Abbott gave an argument for Texas’ right to self-defense, highlighting his stand on the Biden Administration regarding “failure to secure the border.”
Abbot stated, “Texas has a right as a state to stop criminals from coming into our state, to make arrests of those criminals—and we have National Guard as well as Texas Department of Public Safety officers who are there to make those arrests and to deny illegal entry,” said Governor Abbott. “And Joe Biden actually does have an option here. Joe Biden’s option is to enforce the laws of the United States and stop this illegal entry.”
According to NBC NEWS, on January 26, 2024, President Joe Biden threw his support behind an emerging immigration deal in the Senate. The President stated, “What’s been negotiated would — if passed into law — be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country.” “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
It is beginning to look like Texas may have more support along the borders than ever expected if the negotiations and the law pass.
