Portland metro area Planned Parenthood names new chief executive

Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette has announced that Dr. Sara Kennedy will serve as the new president and chief executive officer, effective March 4.

I am honored to join … an outstanding Planned Parenthood affiliate with a deep commitment to delivering equitable, quality and inclusive health care and education throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington,” Kennedy said. “At a time when reproductive and human rights are under attack, we will work together to expand our services and our reach, to be a safe place for all people to receive quality health care in Oregon and Southwest Washington.”

Kennedy is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, with a fellowship in family planning, specializing in abortion, contraception and clinical research. She has a master’s degree in public health. She previously served as chief operating officer and chief medical officer for Planned Parenthood Northern California.

“Sara’s extensive experience and knowledge consistently demonstrate exceptional vision and strategic acumen,” local board chair Sally Brown said.

Kennedy will fill the leadership position made vacant by Anne Udall’s retirement in August 2023. During her six-year tenure, Udall played a pivotal role in the local affiliate’s growth and achievements. And “the organization extends its gratitude for her contributions,” according to a press release from Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette was founded in 1963 and runs eight health centers in Oregon and Washington.
