United States Senator and chairman of the human rights sub-committee Jon Ossoff , joined The Rashad Richey Morning Show to discuss the launch of an inquiry into the alleged abuse of youth in juvenile detention facilities in Georgia and nationwide. The interview shed light on the systemic issues surrounding the conditions of incarceration for minors in these facilities.

Sen. Ossoff highlighted the importance of this investigation, stating, “This is a systemic issue nationally. The conditions of incarceration for youth in juvenile detention facilities.” He expressed the need to expand the scope of ongoing oversight and investigations to include facilities holding minors to truly understand what is happening behind bars.

Dr. Richey raised concerns about the reported deaths of teenagers and sexual assaults on minors in Georgia’s juvenile detention facilities, as well as similar allegations in other states. Sen. Ossoff acknowledged the severity of these issues and emphasized the need for sustained attention from investigators and the public to drive legislative change.

The senator also reflected on his past investigations into corruption, abuse, and misconduct in the prison system, which led to the creation of the Federal Prison Oversight Act. Sen. Ossoff stressed the importance of laying a foundation of truth through thorough documentation and factual evidence to drive policy reform.

When asked about bipartisan support for his efforts, Sen. Ossoff expressed optimism, stating, “There is a level of interest and support for prison oversight and reform among my Republican colleagues when we focus on the constitution, the rule of law, and the human rights of Americans.”

The interview concluded on a note of hope for positive change, with Sen. Ossoff emphasizing the power of truth in creating a more just and humane prison system. As he aptly put it, “Positive change begins with the truth.”
