On Tuesday Jan. 30, Hayward Hurricanes boys basketball was at full throttle as they sprinted past Barron 81-67 at the RJS gym. The Canes led at halftime, 43-38.

Sophomore guard Lucas Hansen fired in 29 points, junior post player Dawson Jorczak scored 20 and junior guard Kyle Gajweski had 12 to lead the Canes. It was Hayward’s fourth win of the season.

“It’s great to finally get a win,” said Coach Harrison. “It’s amazing what happens when you see the ball go through the hoop. It just boosts everyone’s confidence.

“Obviously, Lucas Hansen had a great game. He attacked the rim and didn’t settle for jump shots. Dawson Jorczak did a great job navigating some early foul trouble to have his best game of the season.

“It was great to see Kyle Gajewski shoot the ball with confidence. He is such an unselfish player that he often passes up shots to get others involved, but we’re glad he was more aggressive and hopefully that continues going forward.

“Tyler Eaton and Nate Harrison were very good with their active hands on the defensive side,” the coach added. “They had 10 steals combined and also did a great job of sharing the ball with a combined 14 assists. Miles McCallum was his usual solid self. He does a great job with the things that don’t show up on the stat sheet: bumping screens, boxing out, setting great screens, and just being solid all around.

“This was just a great team win. There were some ebbs and flows, as there is in every game. Barron cut it to one point about midway through the second half and I thought we did a great job of keeping our composure and figuring out a way to win. Hopefully we can use this as something to build off of and finish the regular season strong.”

On Friday Feb. 2, the Hurricanes traveled to first-place Cameron, where the Comets rolled to an 82-51 win. Brady Quinn fired in 38 points for the Comets, who are ranked seventh in the state in Division 4.

“There is a reason they are ranked in the top 10 in Division 4, said Coach Harrison. “They can beat you in multiple ways and Friday it was Quinn eating us up on the inside and them being physical on the ball defensively and jumping our passing lanes.

“I thought we did a decent job against everyone else, but Quinn was really good, one of the better players in our conference.

“On our end, we have to cut down on the turnovers. We had too many weak turnovers where they just took the ball from us. I can handle aggressive turnovers, but we were not ready for their physicality. We also need to do a better job playing post defense.

“We have to get back to 3/4-ing the post from the bottom and forcing them into our help in the middle. Once we hop behind we have to be able to wall up and move our feet. That is certainly not the only reason we lost but just something I think has been lost throughout the year.”
