    Photos: Coquille In School Tournaments to find players for State Championships

    A week of battles during Coquille’s In School Chess Tournaments January 29th, nine high school players competed for school champion in a chess tournament held during school. There were tight battles but Riley Jones ended up defeating all his school mates he was paired against. High School Champion: Riley Jones Junior High School Champion: Jeremiah Thompson 12th grade champion: Riley Jones11th grade champion: Dillian Richardson9th grade champion: Liam Haan8th grade champion: Tyler LeBrun7th grade champion: Jeremiah Thompson The High school players are preparing to play in the Oregon High School Chess Team State Championships March 1st and March 2nd at the Oregon Episcopal School in Portland. Riley Jones, Frank Morse, Dillian Richardson, Jaxon Corbus and Liam Haan (alternate) will make up the Coquille High School Team. Meanwhile January 31st, Sixty five elementary players competed for school champion during school. Ari Ish-Shalom, Ruth Scott and Madge Fanno were moved up into the 4th through 6th grade section as they were established great players and they proved it. Ari Ish-Shalom was undefeated by the end of the tournament. Ruth Scott suffered a single loss against Abigail Fanno, the fifth grade champion. The sixth graders will be added to winners of the Coquille Junior High tournament to fight for the middle school team regional championship.
