BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The San Diego State University (SDSU) Brawley campus will be adding new laboratories.

Local leaders and the SDSU community came together for a historical event as the campus will be expanding.

The project has a price tag of $80 million that came from state funding approved by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

This is to expand sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics opportunities for local students.

Former California State Senator Ben Hueso said he remembers when the Brawley campus was planning to close but on Friday, history is being made.

“And I have to say that I am very proud of what we did together in turning things around, nothing's ever done by one person and in the case of turning California towards a new path fighting to bring resources to imperial county it was a community-wide effort," stated Hueso.

The laboratories will have a stem innovation hub for students and faculty.

The project is set to be completed next year.
