    MGM wrestling reaches team sectionals for first time in program history with second-place finish at regionals

    For the first team in program history, the Monona Grove/McFarland wrestling team has qualified for team sectionals.

    The Silver Spartans finished second at the WIAA Division 1 Oregon Regional on Saturday, Feb. 10 with a score of 169 points.

    The second-place finish qualifies MGM for the team sectional where they will face Mukwonago on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Mukwonago High School.

    The winner of that dual will face the winner of Sun Prairie against Janesville Parker later in the night with the winner advancing to state.

    MGM saw nine wrestlers qualify for individual sectionals at regionals. Luke Rux and Quran Dunne-Morgan led the way, finishing in first place in their weight brackets.

    Dunne-Morgan scored a pinfall (3:05) over Daniel Hernandez and then won the first-place match at 120 by an 11-9 decision over Logan Steffen.

    Rux won both matches at 175 by pinfall, winning by pinfall over Abbott Williams at 29 seconds and pinning (5:35) Niko DeZiel in the championship match.

    Xavier Denman took second at 150. Denman won by pinfall (3:41) against Landon Schult and won a 7-6 decision against Will Hollister in the semifinals. In the championship match, Denman lost a 7-1 decision to Jackson Guenzler-Soda to finish second.

    Austin Nickels qualified with a second-place finish at 126. Nickels won by pinfall (3:10) against Lukas Hartberg before losing a 6-0 decision to Cade Aaberg. In the consolation bracket, Nickels won by pinfall (1:30) against Jack Ireland and won the second-place match by injury forfeit.

    Deangelo Clay placed second at 215. Clay won by pinfall (0:13) against Dylan Clark and won an 8-4 decision against Sabastian Soumphonphakdy in the semifinals. In the championship match, Clay was pinned (4:56) by Jaxon Johnson to take second.

    Brevid Roth won the second-place match at 285 with a pinfall (4:44) against Rylan Guth. Roth also scored two other wins, winning by pinfall (3:08) against Dylin Randle and scoring a 4-0 decision against Trenton Thorpe. In the championship match, Roth lost by pinfall (3:15) to Corbin Smith.

    Nick Gallagher scored third at 190. Gallagher won by pinfall (1:35) against James Massie before losing a 3-0 decision against Gaitlin Empey. In the third-place match, Gallagher won a 4-2 decision against Jack Rathfelder.

    Hayden Ballweg finished fourth at 144, winning a 6-5 decision against Jumir Torres. Ballweg would then lose by pinfall (1:02) to Cole Sarbacker and lost a 15-0 technical fall to Carson Bremmer to clinch fourth.

    Colten Ballweg was the ninth Silver Spartan to qualify for sectionals, scoring a 12-5 decision win over Victor Rivera in the fourth-place match at 165. Ballweg also scored a 9-5 decision win over Randy Shaw, lost by pinfall (1:06) to Eli Leonard and lost by pinfall (1:20) to Tomas Neumann in the regional.

    Also competing at regionals, Chaston Dotzauer lost a 6-1 decision to Rylan Heine at 132. Kaleo Cardoso lost by pinfall (3:02) to Robert Wildenauer at 138 and then lost by pinfall (0:41) to Evan McGill in the next round.

    Dominick Hyatt wrestled at 157, losing by pinfall (3:02) against Bryson Kundinger before scoring a winning pinfall (0:40) against Atticus Ruhland. Hyatt then lost by pinfall (2:41) to Gage Nelson.

    While Dotzauer, Cardoso and Hyatt did not qualify for individual sectionals, the trio will still be eligible to wrestle in the duals.

    The individual sectional qualifiers will compete at Milton High School on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Division 1 Milton Sectional.

    Team scores: Sun Prairie 228, Monona Grove/McFarland 169, Oregon 168, Stoughton 150.5, Verona 137, Fort Atkinson 116, Mount Horeb 102.5, Madison La Follette 35.5.
