Opinion: 10 Thoughts About the Super Bowl

    2024-02-12

Some things go beyond the game.

I don’t gamble, but if I did, I wouldn’t bet against Patrick Mahomes. Last night was another example of why that’s a good policy. The Chiefs rode Patrick Mahomes to another Super Bowl win. Mahomes was aided and abetted by the greatest TE in football history as well as possibly greatest coach the NFL has ever seen.

But beyond that, not to be overlooked is the contributions of the Chiefs’ defense and special teams. The Chiefs’ defense has been exceptional all year, with the secondary in particular standing out. The special teams came up with a huge turnover and Harrison Butker may be the best kicker in the NFL.

Beyond those things here are some takeaways from the Chiefs 25–22 Super Bowl win over the 49ers.

1: Travis Kelce could have been flagged for roughing the coach.

The spectacle of Travis Kelce charging head coach Andy Reid and nearly knocking him over was disconcerting. The excuse that Kelce just wants to win doesn’t cut it. The Chiefs are approaching villain status with garbage moves like that.

2: No, the Super Bowl wasn’t rigged.

I saw this trending on Twitter. No evidence was presented, just an asinine theory stated as fact. Did Taylor Swift use a Jedi mind trick to get 49er, Darrell Luter let a punt hit him in the foot to create a turnover? What mysterious power did she exert over the outcome of the game?

3: There is no next Patrick Mahomes.

He’s a unicorn. Teams hoping to draft another one might as well go on to Plan B.

4: Outside noise doesn’t seem to distract Mahomes.

His father was arrested on a DWI charge eight days before the Super Bowl, and his brother Jackson got dissed at a party by his wife the night before the Super Bowl. Patrick just seems unfazed by what’s going on around him, on and off the field.

5: Andy Reid may be a better coach than Bill Belichick.

He certainly seems more personable, and does a really good TV commercial, which I feel should be the tie breaker.

6: Usher one upped Janet Jackson.

Janet Jackson showed one breast, Usher showed two. Generally speaking, I don’t care for the Super Bowl halftime shows, but I’m not their target demographic. Does anybody know what happened to Up with People? Or Bruno Mars for that matter.

7: Tony Romo seemed to have learned a new word before the Super Bowl.

And that word was leverage. How many times did he use that word? I don’t think it will help him leverage a raise.

8: How does Taylor Swift feel about her boyfriend accosting an old man?

The Kelce brothers often act like wild men. How much of that is an act and how much is the real thing? I wonder if marrying into that situation is daunting proposition to her?

9: Why did the 49ers elect to take the ball in overtime?

It seems the 49ers didn’t know the rules for overtime are different in the playoffs than in the regular season. How does the head coach for a team in the Super Bowl not know that? By the way, Tony Romo also seemed clueless about how things worked.

10: When he comes to playing QB, Patrick Mahomes is a savant.

Not only is he immensely physically gifted, but he also just knows what needs to be done to win. To me, Patrick Mahomes is the greatest football player I’ve ever seen.
