    Falcons boys and Cooper girls hoops net two wins

    In a busy week of basketball, the Armstrong boys and Cooper girls showed out with two wins each, while Breck boys basketball took its first loss of the 2023/24 season to Washburn.

    Armstrong

    The Falcons boys basketball team continued to emerge from a difficult start of the season last week with a 87-74 win over Coon Rapids. The victory improved the team’s conference record to 7-4, tied for fifth in the Northwest Suburban Conference standings.

    Seth Newbern, Desmond Ware, and Charles Duncan continued to combine well for the Falcons, scoring 21, 17 and 16 points, respectively.

    The Falcons were back at it on Feb. 9, beating Minneapolis Roosevelt 83-59 on the road to improve their overall record to 12-8 this season. Ware led the scoring with an impressive tally of 21, with Navonn Fields close behind with 20. Fitz Freeman had eight points, collecting them from a series of dunks against the hosts.

    Armstrong boys basketball will play two games the following week, hosting Elk River on Feb. 14, before traveling to Maple Grove on Feb. 16.

    The Falcons girls, who narrowly lost to Coon Rapids and Minneapolis Southwest last week, will play two games the following week, first traveling to Elk River on Feb. 14, before hosting Maple Grove on Feb. 16.

    Breck

    Amid a busy week of three basketball games, Breck boys basketball continued to create excitement last week. It started with a 100-50 win over Brooklyn Center on Feb. 5, which saw senior Daniel Freitag and sophomore JP Musoke score 40 and 22 points, respectively.

    A second win came on Feb. 7 as Breck beat St. Agnes 76-72, but the Mustangs did eventually face their first loss of the 2023/24 season on Feb. 10, losing 66-64 to Minneapolis Washburn. This adjusted their overall record to 22-1.

    The Mustangs girls got one win last week, beating Edison 54-18 after losing to Spectrum and St. Croix Prep, but the week continued an overall positive run through mid-January into February for the team, who now has six wins in its last 10 games.

    Breck boys and girls basketball will play one game each the following week, with the boys traveling to Eastview while the girls host Higher Ground.

    Cooper

    Cooper girls basketball started early last week with an 80-27 win over Richfield on Feb. 6, earning their third conference win of the season and earning its highest score of the season. Somah Kamara scored 23 points in the win. The Hawks kept at it on Feb. 9, defeating St. Paul Como Park 88-63 on the road to improve their overall record to 7-14.

    The boys also played two games last week, narrowly losing 74-64 to Richfield and 81-76 to Minneapolis Southwest. Chance Wicks put up 43 points between the two games, while Rylan McPipe scored 34 in total.

    The Hawks will take on two conference opponents last week, with both the boys and girls facing St. Anthony and Holy Angels on Tuesday, Feb. 13 and Feb. 16 respectively.
