Valentines Day, named for the beheaded saint, (not his best day, obviously) is thought to have evolved first in Rome fom a spring festival of drinking, sex, and general debauchery. Pope Gelasius I, is often attributed with replacing the pagan festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated for centuries in the middle of February it with St. Valentine’s Day. Of course, in 1929 a bunch of guys in Chicago with tommy guns almost ruined the day for everyone.

If you work in the floral or restaurant business it is either the worst or best day of the year, depending on whether you are an owner or a worker. Retail can be exhausting on this day, restaurants serving "special" menus with heart shaped foods, and boyfriends buying last minute flowers they forgot to get.

For many, it is a make or break day for relationships. It must be a weak one if this day can be the decisive factor.

For most of us, it's a day to show the person you love you remember them and say thank you in some special way for your time together. If your partner forgets, tell them you love them and smile.

Americans spending is projected at $25.8 Billion dollars for this one day. So if you own a flower shop, REALLY smile!
