    Beloit College women pull out 54-52 win over visiting Grinnell

    BELOIT — A balanced scoring attack and some clutch free throw shooting in the fourth quarter carried Beloit College to a 54-52 Midwest Conference victory over Grinnell at Flood Arena Wednesday night.

    With the win, Beloit tied Grinnell and Lawrence for fourth place in the MWC with an 8-7 record.

    The game was tight throughout with a final tie at 46-46 on a 3-pointer by Grinnell’s Bailey Stoves with 1:15 remaining in the contest.

    Beloit’s Hailey Johnson answered with a shot in the lane to put the Bucs ahead 48-46 with 1:01 to play and teammate Hannah Welte hiked it to 50-46 with just 26 seconds left.

    Grinnell didn’t go quietly. Eva Carchidi pulled her team within 50-49 with a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left.

    The Pioneers (13-10) sent Welte to the line and she hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 51-49 lead. Grinnell turned the ball over and then sent Liz Kalk to the line. Her two free throws made it 53-49 with 12 seconds remaining.

    The Bucs (10-13) fouled Carchidi and her two free throws cut it to 53-52, but with just 3 seconds left. Grinnell fouled Kalk and she hit 1-of-2 free throws for the 54-52 final. Grinnell missed a long desperation shot at the buzzer.

    Kalk led the Bucs with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Johnson had 12 and both Johanna McNair and Welte had 10 points. Welte also had eight rebounds.

    Erin Lillis led Grinnell with 13 points.

    The Bucs held Grinnell to eight points in the first quarter and took a 12-8 lead. The Pioneers outscored the Bucs 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 31-26 halftime lead. Kalk gave the Bucs a 23-23 tie with a layup, but Grinnell closed the half on an 8-3 run.

    Beloit went back in front 39-37 heading to the fourth quarter thanks to a 13-6 advantage in the third quarter.

    The Bucs finish the regular season at Lake Forest on Saturday.
