A few last thoughts about football

The football season has come to an end and before I shift my focus from the field to the court, I have a few more thoughts and questions related to America’s favorite sport.

Anyone else feel bad for San Francisco’s kicker who held the record for longest Super Bowl field goal in history, but only for about 20 minutes? Anyone else remember when kicking a field goal of over 50 yards was a massive accomplishment?

While I am asking questions, anyone else wondering if time was about to expire for Kansa City in overtime of the Super Bowl? I was in a room full of people wondering if Andy Reid was scheming against the 49ers and a clock about to run out of time.

If you have not gone to YouTube and looked up, “Andy Reid punt pass kick competition,” I strongly encourage you to do so. The coach competed in the NFL’s youth competition as a kid, and the short video is worth the search and not hard to find.

That man deserves all his flowers by the way. He didn’t win a Super Bowl in Philadelphia, but he was successful there with Donovan McNabb.

Andy Reid pushed to move Kansas City up in the draft to get a former Major League Baseball player’s son most of us had never heard of. Then he traded the team’s quarterback and 2005 number one overall draft pick to Washington to give the starting job to this Patrick Mahomes fellow. They have had some success together.

Julius Peppers is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The man from Wilson was a phenomenal athlete who spent his prime entirely in the state of North Carolina.

He played college basketball and football at Carolina and was good enough to play both professionally, though he was clearly better at football. He went on to be drafted by and play for the Carolina Panthers where he spent the majority of his career. He is another man I am glad to see you get the flowers he deserves.

Chip Kelly is replacing Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State? I am very curious to see how that is going to work out because I don’t think Kelly has ever had access to a pool of talent that will be so much better than most of the competitors.

I understand Nick Sabin is going to College Gameday. Is he the next Lee Corso, assuming of course Lee Corso ever retires?

Drake Maye should go number one in the draft. While I am admittedly biased about the Tar Heel quarterback, it doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

He played behind a sketchy offensive line and for multiple offensive coordinators. If Maye and Caleb Williams had switched teams, I think Maye, surrounded by that talent and playing for that program, is widely considered the likely number one overall pick whilst I am writing a column about how UNC QB Caleb Williams deserves to be drafted first. At least I’m honest.
