Eastbound Broad Street was closed for several hours in Stamford Thursday due to a water main break.

The water main break on Broad Street and Grove Street caused heavy delays in the area.

Aquarion Water Company said a 12-inch valve had to be replaced on a 12-inch water main break near 200 Board Street.

As a result, more than 100 apartments at the Canterbury Green building were out of running water for most of the day.

Officials say more water main breaks happen during the winter because of frigid temperatures and shifts in the soil.

"Sometimes they only affect one customer, sometimes they affect multiple customer. We just had a snowstorm a couple days ago, that adds challenges as well," says George Logan, director of community relations with Aquarion.

Logan said the goal was to replace the value effectively and resume service for customers.

"We have the right equipment, the right expertise. It's just important we do everything in a safe manner to make sure the work gets done in a speedy way and everyone is safe, everybody goes home just as healthy as when they started the shift," says Logan.
