Hempstead police and the Nassau district attorney's office say they are investigating if $3 million was wired from the Hempstead Union Free School District to hackers.

News 12 is told a large money transfer was being made to the Evergreen Charter School, which somehow got into the hands of hackers.

The district held an emergency meeting Friday evening to seek legal counsel.

Hempstead police and the district attorney confirmed the $3 million figure, but Hempstead School Board President Lamont Johnson said originally it was thought to be $3.5 million that was taken by hackers. He says that it was later determined that the actual amount taken was $300,000.
