    Karen Capozzii named financial operations manager for Pitt County Schools

    Karen Capozzi, who has provided fiscal leadership for two public school systems spanning a combined 10 years, has been named financial operations manager for Pitt County Schools.

    Capozzi served as business manager with the Berlin Central School District in New York from 2013 to 2022, as operations manager with the College of Medical Science at Virginia’s University of Lynchburg, Virginia, as chief financial officer with Lynchburg City Public Schools.

    Her role at PCS includes the development of the district’s annual budget, coordinating and supervising job responsibilities within the financial services office and preparing reports for the Board of Education and both system-wide and internal departments. Capozzi also monitors the district cash position and maintains a continuous and sustainable internal control program for all funds that ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

    Capozzi steps into a position vacated when Michael Hardy was promoted to chief financial officer.

    She is a magna cum laude graduate of Campbell University, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration before going on to receive a master of business administration and accounting from Liberty University.

    Transportation employees recognized

    In conjunction with February’s Love the Bus month, Director of Transportation Richard Hutchinson recognized the following Pitt County Schools transportation employees at a recent Board of Education meeting: Benny Harris and Carlton Daniels, substitute bus drivers; Tonya Nichols, site bus driver at South Greenville Elementary and E.B. Aycock Middle schools; Porsha Artis, travel tracker and bus tracker specialist; Michael Hardy, mechanic and fuel truck driver; and Luis DeJesus, parts and inventory manager.

    PCS receives public relations awards

    Pitt County Schools has received honors from the North Carolina School Public Relations Association for excellence in communications.

    PCS was one of 35 school districts statewide to receive a Blue Ribbon Award. NCSPRA awards for outstanding and effective communication at a Feb. 9 ceremony in High Point.

    PCS received four gold-level awards for outstanding Publications (INSPIRE MAGAZINE), Graphic Design (#PCSstudent), Photography, and Digital Media Engagement (#PCSGraduate).
