    Cooper boys hoops nets two wins, girls stun Holy Angels

    The Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks basketball teams had a strong run of results last week, with the boys beating St. Anthony and Holy Angels on Feb. 14 and 16, while the girls beat Holy Angels as well.

    Cooper boys basketball started last week with a 69-53 Tri-Metro Conference win over St. Anthony on Feb. 13 at home. The victory came in comeback fashion, with Cooper down 37-24 at halftime. The Hawks scored 45 points in the second half, while holding St. Anthony to 16.

    Rylan McPipe led Cooper’s scoring on the night with 20 against St. Anthony. Chance Wicks added 15 and Anthony Jones scored 12.

    The Hawks made it a week to remember with a second conference win on Feb. 16, beating Holy Angels 81-72 on the road. This improved their conference record to 6-8, 9-12 overall.

    McPipe continued a big week, scoring 18 more points to lead the way. Anthony Jones added 17 points and Jahnial Jones scored 13.

    Cooper boys basketball will play three games the following week to conclude their regular season, hosting Kennedy on Wednesday, Feb. 21, traveling to Brooklyn Center on Feb. 22, and playing Patrick Henry on Feb. 24.

    Cooper girls basketball opened last week by narrowly falling 68-60 to St. Anthony on the road on Feb. 13. Somah Kamara scored 28 points in the game against St. Anthony. Ziyarah Turner-Stensrud added 11.

    The Hawks mounted a perfect response on Feb. 16, hosting Holy Angels in a 62-60 win to improve to 4-9 in Tri-Metro Conference play, 8-15 overall. Holy Angels provided a serious challenge for Cooper. The Stars, even after this loss, were still second with a 9-5 record in the conference standings.

    Kamara added 20 more points, while Zoe Simmons scored 15 and Amiyah Rulford added 10. Kamara, who recently broke the program’s single-game-scoring record, surpassed 500 points for the season this week with her two performances.

    Cooper girls basketball will play two games the following week to conclude their regular season, traveling to Kennedy on Wednesday, Feb. 21, before hosting Visitation on Feb. 22.
