In a recent national study conducted by researchers at the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University and The Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) emerged as a standout performer in terms of academic recovery following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study, which examined data between 2022 and 2023, revealed that CPS students' reading scores are rebounding at a faster rate compared to most other school districts across the country.

Notably, the state of Illinois itself led the nation in reading growth during the same period, joining just four states that have successfully returned to pre-pandemic achievement levels. However, the recovery in math scores hasn't been as robust, with both Illinois and Chicago ranking in the middle of the pack compared to other states and districts.

Chicago Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova attributed this remarkable growth in reading scores to the strategic allocation of federal COVID relief funds by the district. A significant portion of Chicago's $2.8 billion allocation was directed towards retaining and hiring staff. Documents obtained by Chalkbeat revealed that approximately $1.4 billion of the funds had been utilized for staff salaries and benefits. This investment translated into tangible initiatives aimed at supporting student learning, such as the deployment of academic interventionists, hiring of tutors, expansion of summer and after-school programs, and the addition of instructional coaches to provide support to teachers in schools with the highest needs.

The positive trajectory in CPS's academic performance stands in contrast to the widening inequity observed in many high-poverty districts across the nation. The study also highlighted notable gains among Black students in reading scores within CPS, reflecting an overall improvement that positioned them significantly ahead compared to pre-pandemic levels.

While these achievements are commendable, challenges remain, particularly in narrowing the achievement gaps between different demographic groups and ensuring the continued support for students with disabilities and immigrant backgrounds. With federal COVID funds anticipated to diminish later this year, CPS faces a projected shortfall of $391 million. Officials have been advocating for increased state funding to sustain the momentum of student recovery efforts.

The remarkable resilience demonstrated by CPS students underscores the importance of strategic resource allocation, dedicated teacher support, and a focus on foundational literacy skills. As Chicago continues its journey towards educational excellence, it serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for school districts nationwide, demonstrating that with concerted efforts and targeted investments, significant academic recovery is indeed achievable.
