David Samson details creative way Marlins would deal with Scott Boras' incessant rambling

Every year at some of MLB’s marquee events, Scott Boras holds court and speaks without pause about his clients, weaving in one pun after another. It’s a relatively entertaining affair, but also something that happens rarely.

He apparently speaks unremittingly in negotiations too, much to the dismay of those on the other end of the phone – who have to deal with him far more regularly.

Boras is at the center of free agency this offseason, as he typically is. He represents four of the top free agents on the market – Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Jordan Montgomery – all of whom remain unsigned with spring training underway.

It’s unclear who will blink first in many of these talks, but that’s something that doesn’t seem to worry the longtime agent.

Negotiating with Boras undoubtedly must be a grind, and former Marlins president David Samson told Mully & Haugh a great story about how they handled Boras once he got going.

“When we would talk to Scott Boras about one of his players, we would be on speakerphone,” Samson said. “I’d be in the office of the GM – whether it was Larry Beinfest or Michael Hill – my office was always next door, and we would keep the phone on, on speaker, and we’d leave the room and do other work in my office while Scott was talking.

“Because every time Scott talks, it’s at minimum for 12 to 16 minutes, and you don’t even need the occasional ‘uh-huh, yeah, oh yeah’ like you do in a normal conversation. There’s no pausing. So we would get so much work done while he was talking in the other room.

“We’d have the assistant to the GM motion to us when he breathed. And then we’d scurry back in and say ‘Scott, we totally understand what you’re saying,’ and we never listened to one word he said.”
