In a recent move that caught the attention of Prince William County residents, the Board of County Supervisors has set the stage for a potential tax hike. The advertised tax rate of 96.6 cents per $100 of assessed value might seem innocuous at first glance, but it translates to a 5% increase for the average homeowner. With the county's rising assessments, homeowners could see their tax bills swell by an average of $243.

County Executive Christopher Shorter's proposed $1.7 billion spending plan, though subject to changes in the coming months, reflects the county's evolving financial landscape. One significant point of discussion revolves around a potential tax hike on data centers, a move that could significantly impact businesses in the area.

Currently paying a rate of $2.15 per $100 of assessed value, data centers might face a substantial increase, with the board eyeing the maximum allowable rate of $3.70. The bipartisan consensus on this issue underscores the need for additional revenue streams, but Democrats advocate for a more measured approach, possibly implementing the increase gradually over two budget cycles.

While grappling with the prospect of higher taxes, the county is also making strategic investments. A collective bargaining agreement with fire and police unions, aimed at improving the conditions and compensation for public safety workers, comes with a hefty $15.4 million price tag. Debt servicing for crucial infrastructure projects and pay adjustments for county staff further contribute to the growing financial demands.

However, the budget also reflects a forward-looking approach. The creation of a county department to oversee forthcoming affordable housing legislation, alongside investments in personnel and resources, demonstrates a commitment to addressing the community's evolving needs.

Interestingly, amidst the fiscal juggling, the budget allocates $1.2 million for the LPGA's 2024 Solheim Cup, a major golf event set to take place in Gainesville. Officials anticipate not only a boost in tourism revenue but also the opportunity to showcase the county globally, potentially attracting new businesses.

As the Board of County Supervisors navigates these financial waters, residents will undoubtedly be keenly watching the budgetary decisions that will shape the county's trajectory in the coming years.

Soon, we will have to sell and leave. They are getting rid of the people who pay those taxes. Instead of the ones who live off the system.
