In a recent development, United Parcel Service (UPS) has made the decision to lay off over 300 workers at its north Portland sorting facility. This move, attributed to a reduction in volume, marks a significant shift for both the company and the affected employees.

According to paperwork filed with the state, UPS plans to close their dayshift operations at the Swan Island facility, located at 6707 North Basin Avenue. The closure, deemed permanent due to the projected lack of future work, will affect a variety of roles within the facility, impacting union and non-union employees alike.

The breakdown of affected workers at the facility is as follows: 272 part-time hourly employees, 11 full-time hourly employees, 40 part-time management employees, and eight full-time management employees. These layoffs are scheduled to take effect on April 19, 2024.

In response to the impending layoffs, UPS has expressed its commitment to assisting affected employees in finding alternative employment opportunities if available. Additionally, the Teamsters union, representing some UPS employees, has announced plans to engage in discussions with the company to address the details of the situation.

This development follows earlier negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters union, which successfully averted a nationwide strike and shutdown last summer. Despite these efforts, the current layoffs highlight the ongoing challenges faced by both workers and companies in navigating fluctuating demands and operational needs.

In a statement provided UPS stated:

“We often evaluate our operations and flex our network to meet volume demands. This allows us to continue delivering industry-leading service while also maintaining competitive prices. We are reducing the package sorting operations at a few UPS facilities including our Swan Island facility. The day sort at the hub will close, effective April 18. Our employees are extremely important to us, and we understand the impact this may have on their families. We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support.”

While UPS emphasizes its commitment to maintaining service quality and competitiveness, the layoffs underscore the broader economic realities and challenges faced by workers in an ever-evolving market landscape.

As the affected employees and their families navigate this transition, attention will undoubtedly turn towards efforts to mitigate the impact and support those affected by the layoffs. Additionally, the broader implications for both UPS and the local community will be closely monitored as stakeholders assess the fallout and explore pathways forward.
