MADISON, Wis. — Delavan-Darien’s Jacob Huff will surely be glad to see Beloit Turner senior Zack Ries graduate and move on from prep wrestling.
The 144-pound sophomore fell to Ries for the third time this postseason with his loss in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 State Wrestling Championships.
Ries had beaten Huff in both the regional and sectional finals, and the Trojan had a solid 7-0 decision win over the Comet to start his second trip to the Kohl Center on a much better note than last season, when he was pinned in the opening round.
Ries (24-6) will now face Luxemburg-Casco senior Isaac Jerabek (35-8) in the quarterfinals, which are set to begin for all Division 2 and 3 wrestlers at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Friday.
Sydney Andrews (31-2, 145), wrestling in the girls tournament, swept her first two matches in dominating fashion.
Andrews pinfalled Barron junior Micahlee Skjerly (22-8) in 2:47 to get the day started before taking 2:39 to pin Waupaca freshman Caylin Johnson and advance to the semifinals. She will face second-seeded Eau Claire North senior Shelly Bullman (41-4) to try and punch her ticket to the finals.
Andrews’ teammate, Mady Lucero (29-9), was pinned in 50 seconds by La Crosse Logan/Central’s Amelia Adams (29-4).
Big Foot/Williams’ Bay sophomore Carter Ries (35-8, 157) lost his opening round when he was pinned by Prairie du Chein’s Bryce Lenzendorf (42-14) in 1:51.
Brodhead/Juda senior Marcus McIntyre (40-2, 138) won his opening match after he pinned Ripon’s Joey Williams (20-3) in 1:12, and senior teammate Joe Lohmar (39-5, 150) advanced while knocking Beloit Turner junior Brody Berg out of the tournament with a tech fall in 5:33.
McIntyre will next face Belleville/Mont./New Gl. senior Mason Mau (42-4) while Lohmar will wrestle Kewaskum freshman Kage Weseman (21-6).
In Division 3, Sam Schwengels and Wesley Egan both broke the 50-win mark on the season with opening-round victories.
Schwengels (50-3, 190) beat Weyauwega-Fremont’s Tellyer Alix in an 8-2 decision and will move on to face Waterloo senior Trevor Firari (35-4). Egan (50-4, 215) beat Coleman’s Devin Otto with an 11-7 decision and will wrestle Blair-Taylor senior Jackson Shramek (39-3) in the quarterfinals.
