'Mass. native's heroic act: Subduing plane door attacker'

    2024-02-23

In a dramatic turn of events mid-flight, passengers aboard an American Airlines flight from Albuquerque to Chicago found themselves in a harrowing situation when a fellow traveler attempted to open the emergency door. Among those who sprang into action was Zach Etkind, a Massachusetts native and familiar face in the online sports community as "The Wonton Don."

Recalling the adrenaline-fueled moments of the incident, Etkind described how he and several others intervened when they heard alarming shouts emanating from the back of the plane. "My wife looked around, and I looked around too, and there was a guy aggressively trying to open the plane door, and the person next to them was like no, no, no, stop!" he recounted.

Etkind emphasized the collective effort that ensued, noting that he and three fellow passengers swiftly acted to restrain the individual. "It was a group effort, but we were able to sort of wrestle him into the aisle, and then a flight attendant came over, and we duct-taped his legs together and then put flexi cuffs over his arms," he detailed.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Etkind's quick thinking and decisive actions helped prevent a potential disaster. American Airlines confirmed that the flight promptly returned to Albuquerque following the incident, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew. "The flight landed safely, and the aircraft was met by local law enforcement upon arrival," the airline stated.

This unsettling event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by airline staff and passengers alike. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there have been 254 reports of unruly passengers already this year, underscoring the importance of vigilance and preparedness during air travel.

In a heartening turn of events, Etkind's bravery did not go unnoticed, even earning recognition from his hometown team, the Celtics. "When I got back to Chicago, there were actually a couple of Celtics players there, and someone told them what happened and they congratulated me and told me I was a hero," Etkind shared, reflecting on the unexpected acknowledgment.

As authorities continue to investigate the incident, Etkind's actions stand as a testament to the power of unity and swift action in the face of adversity. Amidst the chaos of a mid-flight crisis, ordinary individuals like Etkind demonstrate extraordinary courage, reminding us all of the importance of remaining vigilant and ready to respond when called upon.
