DAR members learn about Equestrian Center

The William Taylor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution enjoyed a visit at its February meeting from Lynn Owen of Amelia, Program Director of Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center. Owen, a registered nurse and forensic nurse examiner, explained how the center meets the special needs of veterans in Central Virginia through equine-assisted activities such as therapeutic riding.

The center, which is located in Powhatan County, provides organized activities for veterans on an average of three days a month. Participants benefit from games, like basketball and cornhole on horseback, as well as exercises and therapeutic riding. All activities benefit cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of participating veterans.

Organized privately in the early 2000s, the Center has since become incorporated and is run by a Board of Directors with considerable volunteer help. The Center receives no government assistance and operates on charitable donations. The Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization. It is dedicated to promoting patriotism and supporting veterans who have given so much of themselves in defense of the United States.
