Russell wow’d the judges during Sunday night’s episode with an original song at her Nashville audition titled, “Skinny.” The powerful lyrics, along with an equally emotional performance by Russell earned her a trip to Hollywood to continue the audition process.

“Growing up, I sang music my entire life,” she said, introducing herself to the judges who initially did not know her family’s background. “I just love writing. I’m 24 years old. I love music. I don’t really sing out as much anymore, but growing up I sang on the road with… my grandma’s a country singer.”

When asked by Luke Bryan who her grandmother is, she simply replied, “Loretta Lynn” before explaining while a superstar to everyone else, she was “MeeMaw” to Emmy.

“She’s one of the biggest Country music singers of all time, but to me she’s just my grandma,” she said. “Growing up on the bus and all that was very normal to me.”

While Emmy’s big talent and family history definitely impressed the judges, they encouraged her to be more confident and own her craft. “We just need to lift you up and get you more confident and you just need to own it,” said Bryan.

Added Katy Perry , “I think you came in like a mouse… I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was — you’re totally different, you shouldn’t give yourself all that pressure.”

Keep up with Emmy’s journey as Season 21 of American Idol continues, every Sunday at 8PM ET/PT on ABC.
