Governor Newsom Needs Money For Stranded Migrants

Illegal immigrants have started to avoid Texas due to the moves of Governor Greg Abbott. Some are now heading west and crossing the border in Arizona and California. This past week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection released migrants at the San Diego bus station as the migrant reception center was closed.

San Diego County had given $6 million to a non-profit called SBCS but they ran out of money last week. Fox 5 reported the facility used $1.5 million a month to support newly arrived migrants.

As funding has dried up for San Diego, California Governor Gavin Newsom faces a new problem to provide support for migrants. Other cities have shared this funding crisis supporting migrants including New York City, Chicago, and Denver.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said according to Fox 5:

“It’s disgraceful for our country and what we’ve become and the fact that this is how we treat immigrants. Border Patrol is their Uber, San Diego is their travel agent.”

Many of the migrants were from Senegal, China, Ecuador, Rwanda, and other countries according to NBC News.

Gabriel Guzman, 30, a painter from the Dominican Republic asked according to NBC News on February 22:

“Are we in San Diego?”
