Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) was given the opportunity to respond to her colleague Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) during an MSNBC appearance after the latter voted “uncommitted” in Michigan’s primary on Tuesday rather than casting a ballot in favor of President Joe Biden .

The Michigan Democrat claimed Donald Trump would be the “end of democracy” and if he had been president when Hamas attacked Israel, he very well might have nuked Gaza. Tlaib has accused Biden of supporting a “genocide” in Gaza by supporting Israel in their mission to eliminate Hamas amid mass civilian casualties.

In a video posted by the organization Listen to Michigan on Tuesday, Tlaib said she was “proud” to have voted “uncommitted” in the primary and she called for an end to U.S tax “dollars to fund a genocide.”

“We must protect our democracy,” she said.

“I have a different perspective than some,” Dingell told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell in reaction. “I’m glad we’re talking about it now and not on Oct. 15. I also say to my colleague who I talk to all the time, you do not want Donald Trump to be president! If Hamas had done this under a Trump presidency, I’m not sure that he wouldn’t have just nuked Gaza, to be perfectly frank.”

Dingell said “honest” and “blunt” conversations are needed on the subject.

Michigan has one of the largest Muslim and Arab American populations in the country, and there has been concern about a movement to vote “uncommitted” in protest of Biden not demanding a full ceasefire. The movement will not receive enough votes to prevent a Biden win, but Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) acknowledged in an earlier interview with NBC that the number could top 10,000.

Dingell said on Tuesday that there is a lot of pain in Michigan because many families have directly lost loved ones in Gaza.

“First of all, I do think we all need to be listening to this community. I lived in Dearborn for 40 years. I know how much they’re hurting and what people don’t understand is how many families have really lost family members,” she said. “Mothers and fathers and grandmothers and aunts and uncles and cousins. There are families that have lost 20, 40 family members.”
