Biden to meet with Teamsters members in March as group weighs endorsement

President Biden will meet with leadership and rank-and-file members of the Teamsters next month at the union’s Washington headquarters as the organization weighs an endorsement in the presidential race.

Biden will attend a roundtable with Teamsters members on March 12, the union said in a press release. He will meet with members, the general executive board and president Sean O’Brien.

“We realize that President Biden’s time is limited and we appreciate that he is making it a priority to meet with Teamsters. Our rank-and-file members and leadership are eager to have this conversation about the future of our country and the commitments that working people need from our next President,” O’Brien said in a statement.

Teamsters officials have previously met with former President Trump, the front-runner for the GOP nomination, as well as third-party candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West.

“Through these roundtable conversations, the Teamsters want to make sure that all our members’ voices are heard and our elected officials do not take for granted the power of the Teamsters vote,” O’Brien said.

The Teamsters endorsed Biden in 2020 but has so far held off on making an endorsement for 2024.

Biden frequently boasts that he is the most pro-union president in history, and he often credits union labor with forming the backbone of the U.S. economy. Biden walked the picket line with striking United Auto Workers members in September, and the group endorsed him earlier this year.

Trump has sought to peel away some of Biden’s support among organized labor, though he has feuded with UAW president Shawn Fain after the group declined to back the former president in 2024, calling him a “dope.”

Trump said after his meeting with Teamsters officials earlier this year that “stranger things have happened” when speaking about a potential endorsement from the group.
