GLASFORD, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — It was always out there, but Illini Bluffs never wanted to talk about it.

“We’ve never once talked about going to state,” said IB girls basketball coach Jim Belville. “Not because we didn’t think we had the talent or couldn’t get there, it was always what is in front of us right now? And that’s what we concentrated on.”

Illini Bluffs beat Galena, 47-41, to capture the class 1A super-sectional title in Brimfield on Monday. The win sends the Tigers to state for the first time in 12 years.

“At the beginning of the season, we came together. We wanted this from the get-go,” said senior guard Brooke Buchen. “We never did talk about it. But this was our end goal and I’m so glad we are here.”

Illini Bluffs will play Altamont in the 9:30 a.m. state semifinal at CEFCU Arena in Normal on Thursday.

“I kept up with all the past (state teams). The girls going to state and playing in the big arena,” said senior Lily Luczkowiak. “I’ve always said it would be so cool to play there. And now I get to feel what that feels like.”
