Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs was the guest speaker at the February meeting of American Legion Tellico Lake Post 256. Mayor Jacobs discussed how life experiences helped to shape who he is today. As part of his presentation, he talked about his early childhood and his love for sports and athletics. A naturally-gifted athlete, he excelled at basketball and football in high school, which lead to an athletic scholarship at Quincy University. With his size, natural talent, and motivation, he was scouted by several pro football teams and expected to play professionally after college, a dream that was dashed after a serious knee injury his senior year. With his chances of professional football over and not willing to give up on the dream of an athletic career, he started training for professional wrestling. The first few years on the independent circuit were less than glamorous, with low pay and few reliable appearances scheduled. His big break came when he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and he attributes his success to his belief in himself, faith in God, and his determination to succeed regardless of what gets in the way. Mayor Jacobs was raised in a military family (his father was in the Air Force) and he developed a deep respect for those serving our country. During his long pro-wrestling career, he made a point to schedule appearances at military bases around the world to help entertain the troops. American Legion Tellico Lake Post 256 meets the first Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Rarity Bay Country Club. The meetings are open to all veterans and typically feature a guest speaker of interest to the local community, along with information about programs and services to help veterans.
