OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Beloit College softball team rallied to down the UW–Superior 4-3 before falling to a hot-hitting Loras College squad 9-1 as it split a season-opening weekend doubleheader on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets plated a pair in the second inning after Sammantha Swartz cracked a triple to right-center field and upped its lead to 3-0 when Larissa Snyd tripled and scored on a double-steal.

The Buccaneers got their first run of the year across in the fourth when Hannah Beran, who came in to pinch run after Allison Olson was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double and scored on Stella Lutes’ groundout.

Beloit stormed ahead with a three-run fifth. Olson’s single scored one and North Boone grad Kaylee Witte’s single brought home two to put the Bucs in front for good.

In addition to her two RBI, Witte got the win after going all seven innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. Swartz took the loss for UW-Superior in 4 2-3 innings of work as she allowed four earned runs on six hits.

Briana Artega and Siddalee Meyers each had two hits for the Bucs.

Against Loras, the Buccaneers got on the board first when Jessalyn Coppe singled to start the third inning, moved to second on Turner graduate Jocelyn Jordan’s bunt single and to third on a sac bunt before Angela Donath’s sacrifice fly to center scored the sophomore.

The Duhawks responded with six runs in the bottom half of the third highlighted by Emily Monahan’s two-run double. Payton Meier added a two-run single in the fifth as Loras outhit the Bucs 11-5.

Beloit showed some early season jitters with four errors and Helena Harrison took the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings of work. Witte allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits in three innings.

Four different Loras players had two hits and Rachel Peat earned the win as she went three innings and allowed one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts.

The Bucs will next be in action during their spring trip to Florida. They open against Macalester College on Sunday at 10 a.m.
