Student wins love poem contest at GEC

Greene Early College ninth-grader Betania Figueroa earned top honors in a love poem contest held by students in honor of Valentines Day.

Early College students in February were asked to submit poems to celebrate the holiday. The contest was sponsored by the Student Government Association and organized by Kailauni Bowles and J’Nyah Corbett.

Teachers at the school judged the work. Figueroa’s poem, “If the moon speak,” earned five first-place votes. She was awarded dinner for two at a restaurant of her choice.

When asked about her inspiration for the work, Figueroa said, “I just used my imagination to write about someone I love.”

Here is her poem:

If the moon speak

On a beautiful rainy night sky

the moon site perfectly up high

she greets me with a glistening light

watching me weep in the twilight night.

Not of sorrow, no

But of love, she knows

If the moon could utter a word

Would it seem absurd?

She’d tell you of the nights I long for you

How lovesick I am, it’s true

I tell her how addicting you are

That your smile outshines any star.

Darling, complete me, body and soul

And your lips make me lose all control.

Your beauty is a work of art,

And your voice warms every heart.

If only the moon could speak

She’d tell you all you’ve ever dreamed

The nights I’ve spent thinking of you, my dear

Make all my worries disappear
