Tennessee to Send Troops to Texas Border Amidst Backlash

As Tennessee prepares to send some of its National Guard troops to Texas to help secure the border through "Operation Lone Star" a bit of backlash has cropped up online.

It surfaced following a tweet by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee:

That and another tweet were eventually answered by tweets from Tennessee citizens worried about their borders (see sample tweet below):

Organizers of a rally to "Protect Tennessee's Borders", at the State Capitol on March 20, 2024 also joined the online chorus.

Demographic changes appear to be driving these concerns:

"Tennessee is a new destination state … for immigrants and refugees who are looking to start businesses and join their families," Lisa Sherman Luna, Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (via Axios)

According to Axios, a University of Tennessee study forecasts the Hispanic population will grow faster than any other ethnic group in the state, "expanding by nearly 400,000 people to make up about 10% of the state population by 2040."

Meanwhile, Tennessee is preparing to send two waves of state active-duty soldiers to Texas to help secure the border. The first deployment of approximately 50 Tennessee National Guard members will consist of volunteers to join “Operation Lone Star.”
